Francesco Meli, Elīna Garanča & Laura Strickling Lead New CD/DVD Releases

By Francisco Salazar

This week audiences will get a chance to listen to a tribute album to one of the greatest sopranos in history, two new DVDs and a soundtrack to one of this year’s most acclaimed films.

The Distances Between

SOMM Recordings releases “The Distances Between,” the second volume of songs – including 17 first recordings – by Stephen Dodgson marking the 10th anniversary of his death.

The album features soprano Ailish Tynan, mezzo-soprano Katie Bray and baritone Marcus Farnsworth, accompanied by Christopher Glynn (piano), Mark Eden (guitar) and Ian Wilson (recorder).

Remembering Tebaldi

Melody Moore pays tribute to the legendary soprano Renata Tebaldi by presenting a selection of arias and scenes by Rossini, Verdi, Boito, Catalani, Puccini, Mascagni, Giordano, Cilea, and Alessandro Scarlatti. She is joined by the Transylvania State Philharmonic Choir & Orchestra under the baton of Lawrence Foster.

In a statement, Moore said “It has been my greatest honor to take on this glorious project in memory of the great Italian soprano Renata Tebaldi and all that she gave the world of opera. In this album, I have attempted to follow closely her life, her influences, her travels and her greatest performances. Having recorded this album in what would have been her 100th year, I felt that she was with us at the studio in Cluj, Romania. I only hope that we bathed that hall in sounds that would have evoked in her a pride, a comfort and remembrance.”

The Summer Night Concert

Sony Classical releases the concert led by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča. This year’s program featured Bizet’s “Carmen,” Gounod’s “Sapho,” and Saint-Saens’ “Samson et Dalila” as well as works by Ravel, Boulanger, and Johan Strauss.

40@40

Grammy-nominated soprano Laura Strickling releases a new recording which is the first installation of world-premiere recordings of art songs commissioned by the singer.

In a statement, Strickling said, “These twenty songs, from composers and poets of diverse backgrounds, are exceptional in their beauty, depth, quality, and range of emotional expression.”

O the new album Strickling collaborates with pianist Daniel Schlosberg.

Ernani

Dynamic releases Verdi’s “Ernani” from the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Leo Muscato directs the production which stars Francesco Meli, Roberto Frontali, Vitalij Kowaljow, and María José Siri. James Conlon conducts.

Naxos releases Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera from the Dutch National Opera. The cast includes Daniel Behle, Olga Kulchynska, Josef Wagner, and Doris Soffel. Marc Albrecht conducts the production by Christof Loy.
