Francesco Meli, Nicola Alaimo & Olivier Assayas Highlight Opéra De Lyons’ 2019-20 Season

The Opéra de Lyon has announced its 2019-20 season featuring some of the greatest stars in the world and a number of new productions of some of the great masterworks in the world.

Nicola Alaimo takes on Rossini’s “Guillaume Tell” with Daniele Rustioni conducting a production by Tobia Kratzer. The cast also includes Enkeledja Shkoza, Jennifer Courcier, John Osborn, Jean Teitgen, and Jane Archibald.

Performance Dates: Oct. 5-17, 2019

Francesco Meli, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Roberto Tagliavini, and Carmen Giannattasio lead Verdi’s “Ernani” with Daniele Rustioni conducting the concert performance.

Performance Date: Nov. 6, 2019

Titus Engel conducts a production by Grégoire Pont of Ravel’s “L’Enfant et les Sortilège” with soloists of the Studio of the Opéra de Lyon Orchestra and Choruses of the Opéra de Lyon.

Performance Dates: Nov. 14-19, 2019

“The Pajama Game” gets a new production by Jean Lacornerie and Raphaël Cottin to celebrate the holiday season.

Performance Dates: Dec. 12-29, 2019

Christophe Mortagne takes the title role of Offenbach’s “Le Roi Carotte” alongside Julie Boulianne, Yann Beuron, Christophe Gay, Boris Grappe, Chloé Briot, and Catherine Trott. Adrien Perruchon conducts.

Performance Dates: Dec. 13, 2019-Jan. 1, 2020

Angel Blue sings the title role of Puccini’s “Tosca” in a new production by Christophe Honore. Legendary Catherine Malfitano plays the prima donna who invites opera singers to her salon to perform Tosca in this inventive production that also stars Mario Cavaradossi and Alexey Markov. Daniele Rustioni conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 20-Feb. 5, 2020

Philippe Forget conducts Macha Makeïeff’s production of John Adams’ “I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky” with members of the Studio of the Opéra de Lyon Orchestra and Choruses of the Opéra de Lyon.

Performance Dates: Feb. 13-25, 2020

Roberto Frontali leads a new production of Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” The new production directed by Axel Ranisch also stars Nina Minasyan, Wenwei Zhang, and Agata Schmidt. Michele Spotti conducts.

Performance Dates: March 13-April 2, 2020

Franz Schreker’s “Irrelohe” gets a new production by David Bösch with Bernhard Kontarsky conducting. The production stars Stephan Rügamer, Piotr Micinski, Deirdre Angenent,
Janina Baechle, Julian Orlishause, and  James Kryshak.

Performance Dates: March 14-29, 2020

Carl Orff’s “The Moon” will be directed by James Bonas.

Performance Dates: April 15-22, 2020

Engelbert Humperdinck and Sergio Menozzi’s “Gretel and Hansel” will get a new production by Samuel Achache. The opera will be conducted by Karine Locatelli with soloists of the Opera de Lyon.

Thierry Escaich and Atiq Rahimi’s “Shrine” makes its world premiere with Martyn Brabbins conducting Richard Brunel’s production.  Julien Behr, Hélène Guilmette, Jean-Sébastien Bou, Elodie Méchain, and Laurent Alvaro conduct.

Performance Dates: May 2-12, 2020

Nikolay Borchev, Mandy Fredrich, Alexander Miminoshvili, Katharina Konradi, Giuseppina Bridelli, Agata Schmidt, and Piotr Micinski star in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” with Stefano Montanari conducting a production by acclaimed filmmaker Olivier Assayas in his operatic debut.

Performance Dates: June 6-20, 2020

Concerts

Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Ian Bostridge, and Erika Baikoff will join the company for concert performances.
