Four European Countries Open Borders as COVID-19 Reopening Continues

By Francisco Salazar

As Europe eases on the lockdown for the coronavirus, Switzerland has announced that it will open borders with Austria, Germany and France.

Following discussions with the Interior Ministers, the Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter and the three countries have come to an agreement to remove restrictions on June 15.

The agreement will allow border crossing but will still limit airfare.

According to Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, these boarders will remain open “as long as the spread of the disease remains under control.”

With the news of border openings, this will allow the cultural sector to return in the fall as opera companies and theaters rely on inter-European travel. While the majority of the festivals have been canceled, 2020-21 seasons had been questioned throughout the past few months due travel restrictions and lockdowns.

Over the past weeks Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and France have seen coronavirus cases drop as they begin to open.
