The Fort Worth Opera has announced its 2020 season and will feature two cherished works from the classic repertoire and one important world premiere.

The 2020 Festival kicks off with Puccini’s “La Bohème” starring soprano Talise Trevigne and Giordano Lucà. They are joined by Tracy Cantin who portrays Musetta, and Zachary Nelson as Marcello. 

La Bohème is one of the most romantic stories ever sung. An unexpected meeting in Paris on Christmas Eve between Mimì and Rodolfo turns into the greatest love of both of their lives,” Director Joe Illick said in a press statement. “We can all identify with Puccini’s powerful tale that has inspired works from Love Story and Broadway’s ‘Rent’ to Baz Luhrmann’s film ‘Moulin Rouge.'”

Performance Date: April 17 & 19, 2020

The festivities continue in downtown Fort Worth at the 900-seat auditorium of I.M. Terrell Academy for STEM and Visual Performing Arts for the world premiere of composer-librettist Hector Armienta’s opera “Zorro.” Mexican-born tenor César Delgado takes on the title role, and his arch-enemy Moncada will be played by Mexican baritone Óscar Velázquez. Soprano Gabriella Enríquez will also star.

“Justice is spelled with a “Z” in the world premiere of Zorro. Diego trains to become a master swordsman and a skilled marksman then puts on his mask to become Zorro, defender of the poor and avenger of injustice. The opera is written in Spanish and English and will thrill viewers and listeners of all ages. Come join us for a season of great music, intense drama, and passionate singing!”

Performance Dates: April 26, 28 & 30, 2020

The festival comes to an end with Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” with David Gately directing the production. The productions stars Vanessa Becerra, Abigail Levis, Curt Olds, and Devon Guthrie.

“Johann Strauss wrote his sparkling operetta Die Fledermaus (German for “The Bat”) about smart people behaving foolishly – something we can all identify with,” noted Illick. “With its scintillating music and the effervescence of champagne, everyone’s questionable behavior is swept away by morning with the magic of Strauss waltzes,” noted Illick.
