Fort Worth General Director Resigns

By David Salazar

Tuomas Hiltunen has resigned as the General Director of Fort Worth Opera.

In an email addressed to OperaWire on Friday evening, Hiltunen stated, “To Operawire: I resigned as General Director of Fort Worth Opera because of different visions of the direction and goals of the company, effective Tuesday, January 21st, 2020. I have no further comment at this time. Sincerely, Tuomas Hiltunen.”

Hiltunen was named General Director back in July of 2017 after the abrupt dismissal of Darren K. Woods in February of that same year.

A native of Finland, Hiltunen received training at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and would become a lecturer at Barnard College and director of Finnish Studies Program at Columbia University. He has performed in theater, opera, concerts, television, and film around the world and his appointment to the Fort Worth Opera was the first time he was appointed to lead an opera company.

OperaWire has reached out to Fort Worth Opera for further comment and will update this story or publish another as soon as more information becomes available.
