By David Salazar

Florida Atlantic University has entered into a five year agreement with TAI Escuela Universitaria de Artes in Madrid, Spain.

The agreement establishes a framework for student and faculty exchanges, joint performances, masterclasses, workshops, guest lectures, and research collaboration, according to the university.

The partnership is coordinated through Florida Atlantic Opera Theatre, with a particular focus on music performance, opera, and lyric theater, and was developed by Mitchell Hutchings, associate professor of music and director of Florida Atlantic Opera Theatre. It aims to build on the university’s existing international training program with the Conservatorio di Musica “Giacomo Puccini” in La Spezia, Italy, through which vocal performance students study Italian and perform in public concerts each summer.

Florida Atlantic offers Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in vocal performance, with students trained in applied voice, opera, vocal pedagogy, lyric diction, and foreign languages. Recent productions by the university’s opera program include Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Mozart and Salieri,” two works by Menotti, and the United States premiere of the modern revival of Guglielmi’s “Amalia e Carlo.” The 2024 production of “L’Orfeo” was named a 2025 National Finalist in The American Prize in Opera Performance.
