Fisher Center LAB Announces Civis Hope Commissions
By David SalazarThe Fisher Center LAB has announced The Civis Hope Commissions for this year.
The program provides an opportunity for contemporary artists to explore past American artworks and provide their own perspectives in a new age.
First up is “Jubilee” by librettist Suzan Lori-Parks and director Steve H. Broadnax III. The work is inspired by Joplin’s “Treemonisha.” There will be a work-in-progress reading of the work on July 11-13, 2025. This will include a semi-staged showcase.
Also in development is composer Courtney Bryan, librettist / director Daniel Fish, and librettist Gideon Lester’s “Suddenly Last Summer.” The work is based on Tennessee Williams’ play of the same name.
The Barrie Kosky and Lisa Kron- conceived “Yentil The Yeshiva Boy” is the third commission of the program. Adam Benzwi will provide the music, with Kron writing the book and lyrics. Kosky will also direct the work, which brings Isaac Bashevis Singer’s book to life.
