Finnish National Opera to Pay Tribute to Late Conductor & Composer Leif Segerstam

Finnish conductor and composer Leif Segerstam will be honored with a tribute event at the Finnish National Opera.

According to the Associated Press, the musician’s son Jan Segerstam said that the Nov. 8 memorial for his father will showcase his musical history. He added that it will include musical tributes for the artist who composed his first work at age 6 and was also a violinist.

Sergstam died on Oct. 9 at the age of 80. He was a reknown conductor, composer, violinist, violist, and pianist and composed 371 symphonies, among many other works. He premiered his final symphony in Helsinki during his 80th birthday in March. I

Sergerstam was conductor and Artistic Director of Stockholm’s Royal Opera, Finnish National Opera and served as chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra from 1995 to 2007 and later became the Chief Conductor Emeritus.
