Fatma Said, Daniela Köhler & Sophia Maeno Lead Theater Chemnitz’s 2021-22 Season

Germany’s Theater Chemnitz has announced its 2021-22 season featuring opera, dance, and theater. For the purposes of this article we will focus on opera and vocal performances.

Premieres

Wagner’s “Tristan Und Isolde” will be conducted by Guillermo García Calvo and directed by Elisabeth Stöppler. The production will star Daniel Kirch, Alexander Kiechle, David Steffens, Stéphanie Müther, Daniela Köhler, Oddur Jonsson, Till von Orlowsky, and Sophia Maeno.

Premiere Dates: Oct. 23, 2021

Johannes Pölzgutter directs a new production of Mozart’s “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” with Guillermo García Calvo conducting the cast headed by Rolf Germeroth, Tatiana Larina, Marie Hänsel, Thomas Kiechle, Siyabonga Maqungo, Florian Sievers, Thomas Kiechle, and Alexander Kiechle.

Premiere Date: Nov. 13, 2021

Lehár’s “The Merry Widow” will star Till von Orlowsky, Tatiana Larina, Maraike Schröter, Marie Hänsel, Reto Rosin, and Thomas Kiechle. Diego Martin-Etxebarria conducts the new production by Michael Schilhan.

Premiere Date: Jan. 21, 2022

Sophia Maeno and Antigone Papoulkas share the title role in Bizet’s “Carmen” with Gustavo Ernesto Peña Pérez, Tatiana Larina, Maraike Schröter, and Jacob Scharfman rounding out the cast. Jakob Brenner conducts the new production by Arila Siegert.

Premiere Date: Feb. 5, 2022

Krása’s kinderoper “Brundibár” will be directed by Sascha Theis and conducted by Dovilė Šiupėnytė. Matthias Winter stars.

Premiere Date: Feb. 26, 2022

“Gluck Auf ¿” will feature music by Gluck, Schoenberg, and Monteverdi. Veit-Jacob Walter directs the new production.

Premiere Date: March 24, 2022

Aida Olga Shurshina headlines the cast of Verdi’s “Aida” in a new production by Barbe & Doucet. Guillermo García Calvo conducts a cast that also includes Alexander Kiechle, Sophia Maeno, and Nadine Weissmann.

Premiere Date: April 23, 2022

Revivals

Mozart’s “Bastien und Bastienne” is set to star Marie Hänsel and Thomas Kiechle in the title roles. The production will be conducted by Diego Martin-Etxebarria.

Oliver Ostermann’s “Bei der Feuerwehr wird der Kaffee kalt” will be performed with Oliver Ostermann and Jeffrey Goldberg conducting.

Premiere Date: Nov. 16, 2021

Offenbach’s “Un mari à la porte (Ein Ehemann vor der Tür)” will star Thomas Kiechle, Marlen Bieber, Tea Trifković, Felix Rohleder, Dan Raţiu, and Ovidiu Simbotin. Dan Raţiu conducts.

Dan Raţiu conducts a revival of Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus.”

Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel” returns for the holiday season with Guillermo García Calvo conducting.

Guillermo García Calvo conducts Wagner’s “Lohengrin” in a  revival of Joan Anton Rechi’s production.

Premiere Date: Feb. 26, 2022

The season concludes with Wagner’s “Götterdämmerung” conducted by Guillermo García Calvo.

Concerts 

Sarah Pascher and Ina Yoshikawa perform a Mahler and Liebermann program with Guillermo García Calvo conducting.

Performance Date: Nov. 3, 2o21

The theater will hold the annual opernball.
