Matthew Christopher Pietras, the fake millionaire who tricked numerous arts organizations like the Metropolitan Opera, died by suicide in May.

The New York Times is reporting that the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner disclosed the cause of Pietras’ death. According to the report, the medical examiner’s office said that Pietras had died from acute intoxication by pharmaceutical drugs, specifying the “combined effects of cyclobenzaprine, clonazepam and propranolol.”

Pietras’ name became well-known in July when the New York magazine wrote an exposé that revealed that Pietras lived a life of luxury by exploiting the finances of his two wealthy bosses: Gregory Soros, a son of the billionaire investor George Soros, and as chief of staff to Courtney Sale Ross, the widow of the Time Warner chief Steven J. Ross.

Earlier in May, Pietras attempted to transfer $10 million to the Met but failed when the donation was flagged as fraud. According to the New York Times, a Soros representative contacted the Met and informed the company that the money actually belonged to a member of the Soros family, not to Pietras. The Met reached out to Pietras, but he did not answer. Two days later, on May 30, Pietras was found dead at his apartment.

The failed donation created a financial situation for the Met, and as a result was forced to withdraw $5 million from its endowment. According to the New York Magazine report, this was not the first time Pietras donated to the Met. His name appears in the Met Opera’s annual report for the first time in 2018-19, under gifts between $5,500 and $6,499. The following season, he gave between $50,000 and $99,999 and repeated it in 2020-21. He was also elected “Young Associate Director” by the board. The magazine also reported that in September 2022, Pietras paid for 20 friends to go to the opera’s opening night, as one of the gala “benefactors,” and also did the same in 2023.
