Experiments in Opera Announces its Spring 2024 Season

Experiments in Opera is set to give four programs during its spring 2024 season.

Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo takes on the title role in the workshop performance of “Nikola Tesla as summoned by the Honorable Spirits of the Grand Gotham Hotel.” Jennifer Zetlan sings the role of Katharine Johnson, with Amanda Lynn Bottoms as Sissieretta Jones/Djuka Tesla, Timothy Stoddard as Thomas Edison, and James Harrington in the role of J. P. Morgan. Clementine Kline and Eric Brenner are also among the cast. Experiments in Opera, in partnership with Works & Process, presents the new opera by Phil Kline and Jim Jarmusch at the Guggenheim Museum. A full production of the opera is expected in the 2025-26 season.

Performance Dates: April 15, 2024

Off The Ground workshop performances presents “Crystal’s Channel.” Written and composed by the company’s Co-founder Jason Cady, the new opera features a solo singer with a ventriloquist doll and guitar. Sarah Daniels sings the role of Crystal and Shannon Sindelar.

Also featured in this series is “Soul’s Unscreened” by composer Roger A. Martinez and librettist Alize Francheska Rozsnyai. Both creators star in the opera. They are joined by a five-person chamber ensemble.

Performance Date: May 30, 2024

“Five Ways to Die,” written and composed by artists in Experiments in Opera’s Writers’ Room makes its world premiere. The interconnected pieces are “Mischief (or Rathattan)” by Jesse Gelaznik and Britt Hewitt, “Valhalla Valley Mall” by Jason Cady, “Water Prayer” written by Seong Ae Kim and Marcella Murray, and Del’Shawn Taylor and Joanie Brittingham’s “Serials Killers and The City.” Sopranos Alize Francheska Rozsnyai and Rose Hegele, mezzo-sopranos Melisa Luna Bonetti and Lisa Neher, tenor Kannan Vasudevan, and baritone Seth Gilman make up the cast under the direction of Shannon Sindelar. Dmitriy Glivinskiy conducts the five-piece chamber ensemble.

Performance Dates: June 27 – 30, 2024

“SOAK” is an accessibility-centered, virtual and immersive electroacoustic toy opera by artist alexa dexa. The live performance features ritual singing and spell-casting by alexa dexa who will perform from their own bathtub for audiences who join in via Zoom. This opera features American Sign Language, song-signing, open creative captioning, open audio and sound description, and access doulas to provide care and support for everyone in attendance.

Performance Dates: July 13 & 21, & August 2, 2024
