Evil Tender Releases Star Wars-Inspired Poster For ‘Die Zauberflöte’

By David Salazar

Publisher Evil Tender is going to kickstart a series of posters dedicated to the world of opera in its “The Opera Print Series.”

The company has announced that illustrator Jonathan Burton is set to showcase the opening poster, which will center on Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte.”

Per a press release, “To a modern eye,’The Magic Flute (‘Die Zauberflöte’ in German)’ plays out like a fantastical ‘Star Wars,’ a tale of faith versus reason, trickery against the blunt righteousness of truth.”

The “Star Wars” comparison seems to be no coincidence as the poster by Burton is clearly inspired by the original poster of the very first images of the cultural phenomenon (in fact, this design has since become standard for the industry at large). We see the villainous Queen of the Night loom large on the right side of the poster where Darth Vader appears in the original “Star Wars” artwork. Below her, we see Tamino and Pamina occupying the same position that Luke and Leia held in the same “Star Wars” poster. The left side of the frame is occupied by Papageno and the dead serpent, though the birds are reminiscent of the spaceships in the movie poster. To cap off the inspiration, the title and credits of the creators are located at the bottom, in similar positions to that of the film’s directors and stars.

Per the press release, there will be a total of 150 limited editions of the poster at a cost of $50 each. They can be purchased at eviltender.com.
