Eve-Maud Hubeaux Makes Heroic Cast Change In Paris’ ‘Don Carlo’

By Francisco Salazar

Eve-Maud Hubeaux replaced Anita Rachvelishvili on the Nov. 20 performance of “Don Carlo” in Paris.

Rachvelishvili sang the first two acts of the performance but could not continue due to Tracheitis. As a result Hubeaux, who performing the role of Tebaldo in the opera, took over the role of Eboli.

However, due to the fact that Hubeaux did not know the original Italian version, the mezzo was forced to sing with a French score at the side of the stage with Rachvelishvili acting the part. The rest of the cast performed in Italian.

Rachvelishvili is set to return for the final performance on Nov. 23. “Don Carlo” stars Michael Fabiano, Nicole Car, Étienne Dupuis, Vitalij Kowaljow, and René Pape. Hubeaux also performs the role of Tebaldo. Fabio Luisi conducts.
