City Lyric Opera & MABC to Present Eugenia Forteza in ‘Con Fuoco’
By Afton WootenCity Lyric Opera and Madison Avenue Baptist Church (MABC) are set to present “Con fuoco” starring mezzo-soprano Eugenia Forteza and guitarist Federico Diaz.
This concert celebrates Hispanic and Latin American heritage with iconic songs from Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and Brazil, along with lesser-known works. Forteza and Argentine guitarist Federico Diaz will perform works by Manuel de Falla, Heitor Villa- Lobos, Andrea Casarrubios, Maria Grever, Violeta Parra, Ariel Ramírez, Carlos Gardel, and Astor Piazzolla.
The term “Con fuoco,” which translates to “with fire,” refers to the initial marking in Manuel de Falla’s song “Polo,” from “Seven Spanish Popular Songs.”
“This concert celebrates Hispanic and Latin American heritage, and a passion for crossing over between classical and popular culture,” Forteza noted in an artist’s statement on the program. “Latin American and Iberian music lend themselves particularly well to this bending of styles, and our mission is to explore this intersection, while adding our own flavor to it. With this performance, we aim to create a unique environment where passion, storytelling and music stop time, allowing us to share this moment with our audience, in the comfort and warmth of this single flame in time.”
The concert will be held at Madison Ave Baptist Church on Oct. 10. “Con fuoco” is set to begin at 7 p.m.
