Erin Wall, Joshua Hopkins & Štefan Margita Headline New CD/DVD Releases
By Francisco SalazarThis week three new recordings are set to debut. Two are complete operas while one features rarely performed masses.
Bruckner & Stravinsky Masses
The Rundfunkchor Berlin, led by its chief conductor Gijs Leenaars and accompanied by wind players from the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, presents masses by Bruckner and Stravinsky. Bruckner’s Mass in E Minor and Stravinsky’s Mass share in their unusual orchestrations of almost a cappella voices with a sparse, extraordinary wind accompaniment. While Bruckner was inspired by open air “country masses,” Stravinsky’s Mass is emblematic of his neo-classical style.
The new recording marks conductor Gijs Leenaars’ Pentatone debut.
Thaïs
Chandos releases a live recording made during two semi-staged concerts in Toronto in November 2019. Canadian soprano Erin Wall sings the title role with conductor Sir Andrew Davis. The recording also includes acclaimed baritone Joshua Hopkins and tenor Andrew Staples.
Der Prinz von Homburg
Capriccio releases Hans Werner Henze’s “Der Prinz von Homburg,” which was captured live at the Staatsoper Stuttgart in March 2019. For this recording, Stuttgart assembled a fine international cast that includes British baritone Robin Adams in the title role, German soprano Vera-Lotte Boecker, Slovak tenor Štefan Margita, and American mezzo Helene Schneiderman. Cornelius Meister conducts.
