Eri Nakamura & Stephen Costello Lead Canadian Opera Company’s ‘Madama Butterfly’

By Francisco Salazar

Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” will be revived on Feb. 4, 2022, at the Canadian Opera Company.

The production will mark the first time in nearly two years that the curtain rises for a live audience at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The production is helmed by Canadian director Aria Umezawa in a COC debut.

For the production, Umezawa will draw on her experience as co-founder of the COC’s Disruptor-in-Residence Amplified Opera that leverages theater as an avenue for innovation and social impact.

The opera will star Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura in her COC debut in the iconic title role, opposite American tenor Stephen Costello in the role of Pinkerton. Canadian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson will lead the COC Orchestra with Price Family Chorus Master Sandra Horst leading the COC Chorus.

“Madama Butterfly” will be performed nine times through Feb. 25, 2022. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m., unless otherwise indicated.
