Eri Nakamura, Anita Hartig, René Barbera, Annette Dasch, Jun Suzuki Headline New National Theatre, Tokyo’s 2021-22 Season

The New National Theatre, Tokyo has announced its 2021-22 season

The new season will include 45 performances of 10 operas, including three new productions. The season is the fourth under Artistic Director Kazushi Ono.

New Productions

Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” will be directed by Jun Aguni and conducted by Maurizio Benini. René Barbera headlines the cast, which will include Aya Wakizono, Alessandro Corbelli, Hayato Kamie, Gabriele Sagona, Nobuko Takahashi, and Junko Saito.

Performance Dates: Oct. 1-13, 2021

Jens-Daniel Herzog directs a new production of “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” which will star Thomas Johannes Mayer, Bjarni Thor Kristinsson, Arian Eröd, Takashi Aoyama, Tomislav Muzek, Tetsuya Mochizuki, and Masako Hayashi. Kazushi Ono conducts.

Performance Dates: Nov. 18-28, 2021

Valda Wilson and Lawrence Zazzo lead Saburo Teshigawara’s new production of “Orfeo ed Euridice.” Masato Suzuki conducts.

Performance Dates: May 19-22, 2022

The season draws to a close with Katie Mitchell’s production of “Pelléas et Mélisande.” Bernard Richter, Karen Vourc’h, Laurent Naouri, Hidekazu Tsumaya, and Rie Hamada headline the cast, which is conducted by Kazushi Ono.

Performance Dates: July 2-17, 2022

Revivals

The first revival of the year will be Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” which will feature Eri Nakamura in the title role with Luciano Ganci as Pinkerton. Andrea Borghini takes on Sharpless while Yuka Tajima interprets Suzuki. Tatsuya Shimono conducts. 

Performance Dates: Dec. 5-12, 2021

Hidekazu Tsumaya and Martina Welschenbach headline “Der Fliegende Holländer.” James Conlon conducts a cast that also includes Ladislav Elgr, Jun Suzuki, and Egils Silins.

Performance Dates: Jan. 26- Feb. 6, 2022 

Jessica Aszodi, Juan Fracisco Gatell, Bruno Taddia, and Roberto de Candia headline “L’Elisir D’Amore.” Francesco Lanzillotta conducts.

Performance Dates: Feb. 7-13, 2022

Anita Hartig takes on the leading role in “La Traviata.” Matteo Desole and Gezim Myshketa round out the cast as Alfredo and Giorgio Germont, respectively. Andriy Yurkevych conducts.

Performance Dates: March 10-21, 2022

 Anette Dasch, Kristinn Sigmundsson, Maria Kataeva, Yoko Yasui, Shingo Uchiyama, Etsuko Kanoh, Naoki Miyasato headline “Der Rosenkavalier.” Sascha Goetzel conducts the revival.

Performance Dates: April 3-12, 2022

Jun Suzuki, Ryoko Sunakawa, and Rie Miyake headline “Die Zauberflöte.” Oleg Caetani conducts.

Performance Dates: April 16-24, 2022
