Equity Submits Pay & Working Conditions Claim for UK Opera Singers
By David SalazarEquity has submitted a claim to UK Theatre/SOLT calling for improved pay, scheduling, and clearer terms and conditions for opera singers across the UK.
Negotiations between Equity, the performing arts and entertainment trade union, and UK Theatre/SOLT, the trade body representing producers across the UK and in London, are set to begin following the submission. Equity is represented in the talks by a working group of members alongside union officials.
The claim targets the agreement setting minimum standards on pay, terms and conditions for opera singers, covering principals, covers, and freelance singers working with UK Theatre/SOLT member opera companies. It calls for improved weekly pay, particularly for the lowest paid, to reflect changing performance patterns across the industry. The claim also seeks improved notice of scheduling to support work life balance and family friendly working, along with clearer terms and conditions for both artists and engagers.
“The demands from Equity’s membership are clear, for too long they have seen their pay stagnate, whilst being expected to show ever more flexibility with their working patterns,” said Equity Singers & Dancers Official Lottie Stables, per an official press release. “This needs to stop. If managers are serious about artists’ wellbeing and dignity, they must address the demands of this claim and ensure fair weekly pay, improved scheduling and transparent terms for all singers.”
A separate claim covering terms and conditions for stage management across opera and ballet is expected to be submitted later in the year.
