The English National Opera is set to present Bizet’s “Carmen” starting on Jan. 29, 2020.

The famed work will be presented in a production directed by Calixto Bieito that explores the relationship of the sexes at the end of Francisco Franco’s rule in Spain. This version is a co-production with the Den Norske Opera and Ballet.

Mezzo-soprano Justina Gringtyè will take on the title role with Sean Panikkar as Don José and Nardus Williams as Michaela; both Panikkar and Williams are set to make their company debuts.

Finally, Ashely Riches will return to the ENO as Escamillo. Other cast members will include Samantha Price, Matthew Durkan, and Alex Otterburn, all members of the ENO Harewood Artists program.

“Carmen” will be conducted by Valentina Peleggi.

The opera will run through Feb. 27, 2020 for a total of 10 performances.
