Enea Scala, Michael Weinius & Raehann Bryce-Davis Lead Opera Vlaanderen’s 2021-22 Season

The Opera Vlaanderen in Belgium has announced its 2021-22 season featuring a variety of operatic works and concerts. Here is a look:

Kurt Weill’s “Der Silbersee” opens the season with Daniel Arnaldos, Marjan De Schutter, Hanne Roos, Benny Claessens, James Kryshak, and Elsie De Brauw. Karel Deseure conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 18-Oct. 16, 2021

“La Nuova Euridice” will fetaure music by Monteverdi, Gluck, Offenbach, Birtwistle, and Sciarrino and will be conducted by Alejo Pérez. Soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou stars,.

Performance Dates: Oct. 23 & 26, 2021

Carla Filipcic Holm, Michael Weinius, Lisa Mostin, Leon Košavić, and Raehann Bryce-Davis lead Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” with Alejo Pérez conducting.

Performance Dates: Nov. 9-17, 2021

Ravel’s “Boléro” and “L’Heure espagnole” will be performed in a double bill with conductor Yi-Chen Lin and director Tom Goossens. Kadi Jürgens, Spencer Lang, Daniel Arnaldos, and Ivan Thirion star.

Performance Dates: Dec. 3-7, 2021

Kyungho Kim, Galeano Salas, Eleanor Lyons, and Nardus Williams lead the cast of Puccini’s “La bohème.” Vuvu Mpofu, Maria Chabounia, Dean Murphy, Luvuyo Mbundu, Vincenzo Neri, Kartal Karagedik, Justin Hopkins, and Leonard Bernad round out the cast with Kristiina Poska and Jef Smits conducting.

Performance Dates: Dec. 10, 2021-Jan. 18, 2022

Two casts will be featured in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte.”  The first cast is led by Robin Johannsen, Anna Pennisi, Edwin Crossley-Mercer, Reinoud Van Mechelen, Hanne Roos, and Damien Pass while the second cast is made up of Cynthia Loemij, Samantha van Wissen, Michaël Pomero, Julien Monty, Marie Goudot, and Boštjan Antončič. Trevor Pinnock conducts both casts.

Performance Dates: Feb. 1-March 6, 2022

“C(H)ŒURS 2022” will be conducted by Alejo Pérez and will star Reisha Adams. The work will feature dancers Zoe Ashe browne, Viktor Banka, Bérengère Bodin, Quan Bui Ngoc, Juliet Burnett, Morgana Cappellari, Misako Kato, Morgan Lugo, Aaron Shaw, Laura Walravens, Shelby Williams, and Lateef Williams.

Performance Dates: March 13-June 14, 2022

Wim Henderickx’s “The Convert” will feature Lore Binon, Vincenzo Neri, Amel Brahim-Djelloul, Françoise Atlan, Daniel Arnaldos, Luvuyo Mbundu, and Guido Jentjens. Koen Kessels conducts.

Performance Dates: May 10-June 4, 2022

Rafael Fingerlos, Eleanor Lyons, and Tareq Nazmi lead Schumann’s “Faust” with Philippe Herreweghe conducting and Julian Rosefeldt directing.

Performance Dates: June 22-July 2, 2022

Concerts 

The company will present Outdoor concert Sint-Jansplein with soloist Yossif Ivanov.

Alejo Pérez conducts Mezzo-soprano Carla Filipcic Holm in a performance that includes music by Debussy, Rachmaninov, and Mahler.

Enea Scala gives a recital with Pedro Beriso.

Alejo Pérez conducts Berlioz’s “Romeo et Juliette” with Kristina Hammarström, Denzil Delaere, and Werner Van Mechelen.

Others 

British tenor Ian Bostridge sings Schubert’s “Winterreise.”

Performance Date: Sept. 17, 2021

Diana Damrau joins the Antwerp Symphony for arias by Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi.  and Gounod. She will be joined by Pavel Baleff and bass Nicolas Testé.

Performance Date: Sept. 25, 2021

Schwanengesang D744 by Romeo Castellucci will feature Kerstin Avemo and Alain Franco in Scubert’s song cycle.

Performance Date: Nov. 18, 2021

Thomas Oliemans and Malcolm Martineau perform a recital with Schubert’s  Die schöne Müllerin.

Performance Date: Jan. 9, 2022

Gustav Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” will be staged by French scenographer and director Philippe Quesne.
