Encompass New Opera Theatre To Feature World Premiere of ‘Anna Christie’

The Encompass New Opera Theatre has announced that it will be showcasing the world premiere of “Anna Christie,” a new opera by Edward Thomas with a libretto by Joseph Masteroff, during the 2018 season.

The showcase, which will take place on Oct. 4, 2018 (with additional performances running through the 21st of October) at the Baruch Performing Arts Center. The production will be led by director Nancy Rhodes and Music Director Julian Wachner.

The production will also feature a special 94th birthday celebration for the composer himself on Sunday, Oct. 7, following a 3 p.m. performance.

Per a press release, the opera is based on Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play and “explores the lost relationship of a woman and her father, and the sailor she falls in love with.”

The opera stars mezzo-soprano Melanie Long in the title role, as well as bass Frank Basile, baritone Jonathan Estabrooks, and actor Mike Pirozzi.
