The Encompass New Opera Theatre has announced that it will be showcasing the world premiere of “Anna Christie,” a new opera by Edward Thomas with a libretto by Joseph Masteroff, during the 2018 season.

The showcase, which will take place on Oct. 4, 2018 (with additional performances running through the 21^st of October) at the Baruch Performing Arts Center. The production will be led by director Nancy Rhodes and Music Director Julian Wachner.

The production will also feature a special 94^th birthday celebration for the composer himself on Sunday, Oct. 7, following a 3 p.m. performance.

Per a press release, the opera is based on Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play and “explores the lost relationship of a woman and her father, and the sailor she falls in love with.”

The opera stars mezzo-soprano Melanie Long in the title role, as well as bass Frank Basile, baritone Jonathan Estabrooks, and actor Mike Pirozzi.
