Soprano Angela Gheorghiu will not be appearing in the title role of Puccini’s opera “Tosca” on March 7, 2020 at the Semperoper Dresden, according to the official press statement on the company’s website.

In her stead, audiences will get a chance to see British soprano Emily Magee, who was already scheduled to take on the role on March 1, 2020. Magee will join a cast that includes Markus Marquardt, Lawson Anderson, Matthias Henneberg, Timothy Oliver and Tilmann Rönnebeck.

Magee has recently performed the role of Eva in Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” at the Bayreuther Festspiele, Ghita in “Der Zwerg” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the title role in Strauss’ “Arabela” at the Wiener Staatsoper, Die Kaiserin in “Die Frau Ohne Schatten” at the Staatsoper Hamburg, and the roles of Gutrune in Wagner’s “Götterdämmerung” and Sieglinde in “Die Walküre” at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, among others.

Giampaolo Bisanti will conduct the production by Johannes Schaaf.

Gheorghiu is still scheduled for four performances of “Tosca” between Feb. 12-28, 2020.
