The San Diego Opera will close out its mainstage 2019-20 season with a production of Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” starting on April 25, 2020.

The opera, written by Cesare Sterbini, will feature David Pershall in the title role with Carlos Santelli as the Count Almaviva. Rounding out the principal trio will be Emily Fons taking on the role of Rosina; Fons was previously heard in the company’s production of “The Marriage of Figaro.”

Other cast members for the production include Patrick Carfizzi as Don Bartolo and Kevin Burdette as Don Basilio. Bruce Stasyna conducts.

The production, which is a co-production with Opera Philadelphia and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, will be directed by Jimmy Marcheso and is inspired by the films of Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. The production is now owned by Utah Opera.

“Il Barbiere di Siviglia” has been performed at the San Diego Opera in 966, 1971, 1982, 1987, 1993, 1998, and 2006. The last production in San Diego took place in 2012. There will be a total of four performances between April 25 and May 3, 2020.
