The Metropolitan Opera is set to open its 139th season with Jeanine Tesori and George Brant’s new opera, “Grounded.”

The opera will premiere on Sept. 23 and will run through Oct. 19, 2024. “Grounded” is a production that wrestles with the ethical quandaries and psychological toll of 21st-century warfare. Canadian mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo stars in the role of Jess alongside Ben Bliss, Kirsten MacKinnon, Kyle Miller, and Greer Grimsley.

The Met’s Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts a newly revised score. Steven Osgood conducts the Oct. 5 performance.

In a statement, General Director Peter Gelb said, “’Grounded’ as the 2024–25 season opener reflects our commitment to expanding the operatic canon with works that comment on the world in which we live. It is with operas such as Grounded that the Met is attracting a younger and broader audience. We’re proud to be presenting it.”

Director Michael Mayer leads the production which will be transmitted live to movie theaters around the globe as part of The Met: Live in HD series on Oct. 19.

The performances of “Grounded” on Sept. 23 and Oct. 9 will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on the SiriusXM app and streamed live on the Met’s website.
