Ellie Dehn, Jennifer Johnson Cano, 21st Century Opera Dominate Arizona Opera’s 2019-20 Season

Arizona Opera has announced its 2019-20 season, which will feature a number of modern works and two major classics.

The season opens in September with the world premiere of the Taliesin West version of “Shining Brow” by librettist Paul Muldoon and composer Daron Hagen. The work will be conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya with Chas Rader-Shieber directing the production. Among the cast members are John Moore, Rob McGinness, Laura Wilde, and Bille Bruley, among others.

Performance Dates: Sept. 27, 28, 29, 2019 (Phoenix); Oct. 5, 6, 2019 (Tuscon)

Gregory Spears and Greg Pierce’s “Fellow Travelers” will get a series of performances with a cast that includes Katherine Beck, Jonas Hacker, Joseph Lattanzi, and Kaitlyn Johnson, among others. Kevin Newbury directs and Daniela Candillari conducts the productions.

Performance Dates: Nov. 8, 9, 10, 2019 (Phoenix); Nov. 16, 17, 2019 (Tuscon)

Puccini’s “La Bohème” will take centerstage with a cast that includes Ellie Dehn, Julie Adams, Mario Chang, Yongzhao Yu, Joo Won Kang, and Kaitlyn Johnson, among others.

Performance Dates: Jan. 24, 25, 26, 2020 (Phoenix); Feb. 1, 2, 2020 (Tuscon)

“Riders of the Purple Sage” returns to Arizona Opera after making its world premiere in 2017 with the company. Thomas Glass, Christian Bowers, Caitlin Lynch, Kaitlyn Johnson, and Joshua Dennis star with Joseph Mechavich conducting and Fenlon Lamb directing. Check out our interview of the work right here.

Performance Dates: Feb. 28, 29, March 1, 2020 (Phoenix); March 7, 8, 2020 (Tuscon)

The season concludes with “Ariadne auf Naxos” with Rebecca Nash and Felicia Moore alternating the title role. Corey Bix, Nicole Haslett, Jennifer Johnson Cano, and Katrina Galka star.
