Elli Papakonstantinou’s ‘OEDIPUS’ To Make NY Premiere

OCD Ensemble and The Directors Company are set to showcase the New York premiere of “OEDIPUS: Sex with Mum Was Blinding” starting on Sept. 25.

The run, which will take place at the BAM Fisher (Fishman Space) in Brooklyn, NY, will feature a  unique take on the famed Sophocles tragedy as created by 2018-19 Fulbright Artist Award winner Elli Papakonstantinou. The work features music by Tilemachos Moussas and Julia Kent with surreal cinematic environments created by Stephanie Sherriff.

The work was previously presented at Stanford University this past April and is set to head to Greece later this fall. The opera’s cast includes Nassia Gofa as Jacosta, Elias Husiak as the Boy, Anastasia Katsinavaki as Teiresias, Theodora Loukas as a Woman, Lito Messini, as Oedipus, Misha Piatigorsky as the MC, and Manos Tsakiris as a Researcher.

Musicians include cellist Julia Kent and pianist Misha Piatigorsky. Barbara Nerness will perform live electronics.

The run will draw to a close on Sept. 29, 2019.
