Eliza Bonet & Olga Perez Flora Headline Opera Southwest’s ‘Carmen en Español’

Opera Southwest will present “Carmen en Español” this May.

The production of the famed Bizet Opera will star Eliza Bonet and Olga Perez Flora in the title role on alternating days. As Don José, audiences will see Isaac Hurtado and Jamie Flora while Octavio Moreno and Cecilia Violetta Lopez interpret Escamillo and Micaëla, respectively. Other cast members include Javier Ortiz, Michael Hiz, Denise Wernly, and Ingela Onstad.

Gary Wedow conducts a production directed by Carson Gilmore. The opera is presented in a translation by Eduardo de Bray that premiered in Barcelona in 1890 before fading into obscurity.

“As far as we know, this is the professional U.S. premiere of this version,” said Tony Zancanella, Opera Southwest Executive Director, per an official press release. “Due to the general popularity of Carmen and the rarity of this Spanish language version, we’ve expanded our usual run of three performances to six.”

“Carmen en Español” opens on May 4 and runs through May 11.
