Elisabeth Kulman Cancels Farewell Vienna Recital

Elisabeth Kulman has canceled her farewell Vienna concert due to the 2G rules in the city.

The 48-year-old mezzo-soprano, who was set to perform her farewell concert at the Wiener Musikverein on Oct. 27 announced that the concert was canceled as she did not want to exclude any audience member that wanted to attend.

The 2G rule notes that in order to enter a concert hall, audience members must show proof of vaccination or must have recovered from the COVID-19 virus.

In a YouTube video, Kulman noted that “Music is universal, it brings people together.” She added that anything else is not music.

Kulman attempted to look for an alternative with the Musikverein but was not able to find one. Meanwhile, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna regretted the decision but emphasized that they had to adhere to the 2G regulation and also support it.

The mezzo is still set to perform in Raiding, Austria on Oct. 22, 2021. Her final performances will be at the end of December 2021 following a 20-year career that began Wiener Volksoper. Kulman retired from the opera stage in 2015 noting singers were not treated correctly in the industry and stating that the industry as a whole was anti-artist.
