Elena Zhidkova Replaces Eva-Maria Westbroek In Berlin

By Francisco Salazar

Eva-Maria Westbroek has canceled the final performance of “Cavalleria Rusticana” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on Sept. 20, 2019.

The Deutsche Oper Berlin announced that due to illness Westbroek was forced to cancel. As a result, Elena Zhidkova will sing the role of Santuzza.

Zhidkova recently performed the role of Eboli in Verdi’s “Don Carlo”  and will reprise the same opera in La Coruña. She will also return to the Wiener Staatsoper for “Rusalka,” followed by presentations of the same work at the Dutch National Opera.

The mezzo joins a cast that includes Roberto Alagna and Rodrigo Esteves. The evening will also see Alagna perform “Pagliacci” alongside Aleksandra Kurzak, Carlos Álvarez, and Samuel Dale Johnson. Paolo Arrivabeni conducts.

Westbroek returns to the stage in October for Janacek’s “Katya Kabanova” at the Berlin State Opera and in November for “Die Walküre” at the Dutch National Opera.
