Elayce Esmail to Lead Music Theatre Wales’ ‘New Directions’ Program

By David Salazar

Music Theatre Wales has announced a brand new program of work entitled “New Directions.”

The program, which set outs to create real change in the opera world, will be led by Artistic Associate Elayce Ismail and will engage with groups underrepresented in the opera world, including  Black, Asian, and ethnically diverse artists, disabled artists, LGBTQ+ artists, and others.

As such, the program will engage with ethically diverse composers, writers, theatre-makers and digital artists for one year to develop and commission new works. The first digital work under this banner is “AMAZON,” which will be presented at the end of August 2021 and includes three commissions.

“I have loved working with MTW whilst creating ‘AMAZON,’ and I’m so excited to continue my relationship with them as Artistic Associate,” stated Ismail in a press release. “’New Directions’ is a fantastic opportunity to work with artists who might never have engaged with opera before, but who can bring a fresh perspective to the art form and join me in reimagining what opera might be.”
