Edmonton Opera Announces 2nd Annual Rumbold Vocal Prize Competition

By Logan Martell

Edmonton Opera has announced the 2nd annual Rumbold Vocal Prize for outstanding, emerging opera singers.

Supported by Grace and Arnold Rumbold, the competition seeks to highlight emerging Canadian artists, with the inaugural competition drawing in about 147 applicants.  Each of the four finalists will receive a cash prize, as well as a week-long residential, professional development program with EO, working with soprano and master clinician Isabel Bayrakdarian.

“We created the Rumbold Vocal Prize to provide meaningful opportunities and assistance to emerging Canadian classical vocalists,” said Grace and Arnold in a joint statement. “The prizes and the Master Class opportunity are intended to help them as they work toward professional operatic careers in leading roles. We were thrilled to see 147 applications in the first year that truly showcased the talent and passion within Canada’s vibrant musical community. Nurturing emerging operatic talent has been an important mission for our family, and we are looking forward to seeing this award continue to grow and support artists by providing a platform to showcase their abilities and gain invaluable experience.”

Applications will be accepted until August 15, 2023, with the finalists to be announced on August 25. The Rumbold Vocal Prize Experience will be held the week of Oct. 19 at Jubilee Auditorium and will be open to the public.
