Edita Gruberová Cancels Upcoming Performance & Ends Career

By Francisco Salazar

Edita Gruberová has canceled her upcoming Maggio Musicale Fiorentino recital and decided to end her career.

In a statement, superintendent Alexander Pereira said, “Edita Gruberová was extremely happy to come for a recital at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino on June 14, 2020, a recital which was then postponed to October 3 due to the changes in the schedule because the health emergency. The forced pause due to Covid-19 has also significantly delayed preparations for her concert.”

Pereira continued, “For Mrs Gruberová it was important to keep her voice in shape thanks to regular artistic performances. The situation created by the virus made it impossible to maintain a singing routine, as all the events were canceled. Since August, Mrs. Gruberová has therefore resumed the preparation of the ambitious program scheduled for the evening of Oct. 3, 2020. Despite her extraordinary commitment, Edita Gruberová informed us today of her desire to end her career. We were extremely happy to be able to host one of the greatest soprano in the world for one of her concerts in our theater, and we are very sorry to know that this great moment will not take place.”

The Maggio Musicale is offering audiences the possibility of exchanging their tickets for Juan Diego Flórez’s concert on Sept. 30 or a full refund.

Gruberová was in the midst of her farewell tour and last year said goodbye to the opera stage at the Bayerische Staatsoper in a production of “Roberto Devereux.”
