Ensemble For These Times With Luna Composition Lab Announces Winners Of 2023 Call For Scores

By Chris Ruel

Following its successful 15th anniversary season, Ensemble for These Times (E4TT), an award-winning San Francisco-based contemporary chamber group, in partnership with Luna Composition Lab, has unveiled the winners of its 2023 Call for Scores.

During the selection phase, the E4TT was presented with 22 scores from 13 emerging women and nonbinary composers. From this pool, they chose six outstanding pieces to be performed across two concerts in January 2024 and January 2025.

“It is an important part of our mission to support underrepresented compositional voices,” said E4TT cofounder and Senior Artist Advisor David Garner in an official statement, “and we were greatly impressed by the breadth, skill, and imagination these composers displayed in their music.”

The selected composers for the upcoming concerts are:

• January 2024: Madeline Clara Cheng (“Forget Your Scarf in My Life” for piano trio); Sage Shurman (“grace fall” for solo violin); and Isabelle Tseng (“Ringlorn” for violin and cello).

• January 2025: Olivia Bennett (“Prelude to the Afterlife” for piano); Gabriella Cariddo (“Because I Could Not Stop for Death”); and Devon Lee (“What I Know About Living,” by Devon Lee, both for soprano violin and piano).

The 2024 concert, “Quest: Music by Women and Nonbinary Composers,” will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. PT at the Center for New Music in San Francisco. For those unable to attend in person, the program will be available online with free access (donations are welcome).
