The Dutch National Opera has been crowned with the award of Best Opera Company by the OPER! AWARDS 2024.

“The Dutch National Opera under its director Sophie de Lint shows in an exemplary way how an opera house can be relevant and win acceptance in a diverse, modern urban society. Sophisticated projects and the right approach bring together people from different origins, backgrounds and interests under the common roof of the house on Waterlooplein. At the same time, its core identity as an opera house remains at the forefront of programming and perception, anchoring the art form in the future. The excellent selection of artists and their fitting combinations for a wide-ranging canon of rarities, classics and impactful world premieres turns every new production into a true experience of special artistic interest. The Dutch National Opera is a house for its city and at the same time an indispensable player in the international opera business,” said to Ulrich Ruhnke, chairman of the OPER! AWARDS jury, in an official press release. “We are very much looking forward to honouring the Dutch National Opera on 29 January 2024 at its own premises in Amsterdam with the OPER! AWARD for Best Opera Company.”

In response to the award, de Lint stated, “We are extremely proud to receive this prestigious award. There are many people involved in creating our programme, so this award belongs to all our great colleagues, artists and partners we work with. We see the prize primarily as an encouragement to continue working hard on the place of opera in today and tomorrow’s society. Sustainability in all its aspects is a crucial theme for us. We will also continue to look for new makers within the context of opera who inspire us with their sounds and stories and further enrich our art form. In short, there is still a lot to do!”

The company will receive the award on Jan. 29, 2024 when the ceremony will take place at the Amsterdam Opera House.

This December, the Dutch National Opera will present productions of “Lohengrin,” “Die Zauberflöte,” and “The Theory of Everything.”
