Dutch National Opera to Revive ‘Rigoletto’ with Roman Burdenko

By Francisco Salazar

The Dutch National Opera is set to open its 2024-25 season with Verdi’s “Rigoletto.”

The famed Verdi opera will be revived in Damiano Michieletto’s production, which opened in 2017. When the production opened critics were mixed and said, “the production is overanalytical and is ultimately sabotaged by its own cleverness.”

In 2021, the staging was shown in Venice at the Teatro La Fenice and underwent some key changes. Now in 2024, it will return to the Dutch National Opera in this revised, “sharpened” version.

Conductor Yi-Chen Lin will be leading the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in her debut with the Dutch National Opera. The production will showcase baritone Roman Burdenko in the title role alongside tenor René Barbera as Duke of Mantua and soprano Aigul Khismatullina as Gilda in her Amsterdam debut. The cast will be rounded out by Alexander Köpeczi and Maya Gour.

“Rigoletto” opens on Sept. 2 and will run through Sept. 29, 2024.
