Deutsche Oper Berlin Unveils Slew of Cast Changes for 10 Operas & 1 Concert

The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced a slew of cast changes for the remainder of its 2024-25 season.

In “The Queen of Spades,” Doris Soffell takes over the role of the Countess for Hanna Schwarz for performances between March 12 – 20. Karis Tucker will sing Polina in lieu of Annika Schlicht and Dean Murphy will play Prince Jeletsky instead of Philipp Jekal for showcases on March 23 and 27. Finally Nicole Piccolomini sings the role of the Countess on March 23 and 27, while Maria Berezovska sings the role of the Governess, instead of Piccolomini for those same dates.

For “Lucia di Lammermoor,” Andrei Danilov sings Arturo on March 17, 2024, replacing Matthew Newlin. Danilov will also take on the tenor part in the Symphony Concert on March 18.

There are also numerous changes for “The Magic Flute.” On March 22, Arianna Manganello sings the Second Lady instead of Karis Tucker, while the role of Sarastro will be transferred from Tobias Kehrer to Youngkwang Oh on April 4, 2024. Matthew Newlin will sing Tamino on that same April 4 performance in lieu of Andrei Danilov. On April 21, Lilit Davtyan sings Pamina instead of Sua Jo, who will sing Papagena, originally designated to Meechot Marrero.

Stepohan Zilias will conduct “Fidelio” in lieu of Sir Donald Runnicles on April 12 – 20, 2024.

In “La Traviata,” Sylvia Rena Ziegler will sing Anina on April 13 and 19 while Thoms Lehman will take over as Germont on April 13.

“Intermezzo” features a ton of changes including Joel Allison as the Commercial Counciler for performances on April 25 – June 14 (a total of six shows). She replaces Padraic Rowan. On those same dates, Anna Schoeck sings Anna instead of Sylvia Rena Ziegler and Clemens Bieber replaces Jörg Schörner as Kapellmeister Stroh. Simon Pauly will also take over the role of the Justice Councilor from Michael Bachtadze, and Nadine Secunde will be the notary’s wife, replacing Kirsi Tiihonen. On June 14, Dominic Limbug will conduct in lieu of Sir Donald Runnicles.

For the June 26 through July 2 “Don Giovanni” performances, Arianna Manganello sings Zerlina instead of Lilit Davtyan and Kieran Carrel takes on Don Ottavio, replacing Matthew Newlin.

Other cast changes include Daniel Frank singing Siegmund in “Die Walküre” instead of Michael König for the performances from May 12 – 29; Matteo Beltrami conducts “Tosca” on June 16 and 23 instead of Andrea Battistoni; and Albert Pesendorfer sings King Marke in “Tristan und Isolde” on July 13 instead of Günther Groissböck.
