Deutsche Oper Berlin Announces Cast Change for ‘La Gioconda’

The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced two cast changes for its “La Gioconda” concerts.

The company announced that George Gagnidze will replace Roman Burdenko as Barnaba and Iréne Theorin will replace Irina Churilova in the title role.

Theorin has performed the role of “La Gioconda” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu and is well known for her German repertoire. She has performed at every leading opera house in the world including the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House, Salzburg Festival, Wiener Staatsoper, and Bayreuth Festival.

Gagnidze is well known for his Verdi and Verismo interpretations and is a leading baritone at the Metropolitan Opera. He has also performed at the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, San Francisco Opera, LA Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Arena di Verona, among others.

Gagnidze and Theorin join a cast that includes Joseph Calleja, Beth Taylor, Judit Kutasi, and Marko Mimica. Ivan Repusic conducts the concert version which opens on Sept. 25.
