The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced a cast change for all performances of Ponchielli’s “La Gioconda.”

The company said, “Angelo Villari will sing and play the role of Enzo instead of Joseph Calleja.”

Villari has performed at the Arena di Verona, Teatro Filarmonico, Teatro Comunale di Modena,  Teatro Bellini di Catania, Teatro Municipale di Piacenza, Teatro Regio di Torino, Festival Verdi, Teatro Lirico of Cagliari, and the Teatro San Carlo.

The tenor will join a cast that includes Carmen Giannattasio, Marianne Cornetti, Marko Mimica, Judit Kutasi, Teresa Romanò, and Dalibor Jenis. John Fiore and Giulio Cilona conduct the production by Filippo Sanjust.

“La Gioconda” will be performed between Feb. 3 and 24, 2024.
