The City Council of Düsseldorf has decided to build a new home for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. 

The new building will be constructed⁩ on the existing site at the Hofgarten. The City Council gave the green light for the planning of an architectural competition and an interim venue.

According to reports for years, Düsseldorf politicians have been discussing whether the building should be renovated or demolished. Another location was also repeatedly discussed. According to politicians, the new building will become a cultural lighthouse project and an opera of the future. The aim is to start construction in four to five years.

The Deutsche Oper am Rhein announced a new Music Director and is set to open its 2023-24 season in August.
