Deborah Voigt, Simon Keenlyside, Gustavo Dudamel Lead Music Academy of the West’s 71st Season

The Music Academy of the West has announced its 71st season which is set for June 11, 2018. The festival will run through August 11, 2018, and will star some of the greatest artists in the world of opera and classical music.

As has been the case for these season announcements, the focus will be solely on opera and vocal music.

Deborah Voigt will give a concert performance that will feature songs and arias by Wagner, Verdi, Richard Strauss, and Ben Moore. Voigt will perform alongside four vocal fellows and five vocal piano fellows.

Performance Date: July 12, 2018

Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” will get a concert performance led by Maestro Giuseppe Mentuccia. He will work with Voice program fellows in Mozart’s operatic masterpiece.

Performance Date: July 21, 2018

Baritone Simon Keenlyside will give a recital alongside pianist Martin Katz. The performance is known formally as the Mosher Guest Artist Recital.

Performance Date: July 25, 2018

Maestro James Conlon will lead a full production of Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” with James Darrah directing a cast that includes Lawson Anderson, Adelaide Boedecker, Seung Yun Kim, Anne Marie Stanley, Kelsey Lauritano, and Benjamin Dickerson, among others.

Performance Dates: August 3-5, 2018

Closing out the festival will be a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” under the musical direction of Gustavo Dudamel. The Venezuelan maestro will lead the Academy Festival Orchestra and Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Among the major events to be highlighted throughout the festival will be numerous vocal masterclasses. Voigt gives a class on July 4, 2018, while Keenlyside is also slated to give a class of his own on July 23, 2018. There will also be one by conductor James Conlon on July 25 and another by Marilyn Horne on August 8.
