Davóne Tines, Julia Bullock & Anthony Roth Costanzo Lead Ojai Music Festival 2022 Edition

The Ojai Music Festival has announced its 2022 schedule. The festival opens on June 9, and runs through June 12, 2022.

For the purpose of this article we will focus on vocal performances only.

Opening night features AMOC’s core members. The program will include music by Andy Akiho, Kate Soper, Alban Berg, Celeste Oram, Matthew Aucoin, Iannis Xenakis, and Eric Wubbels.

Performance date: June 9, 2022

“EASTMAN” reflects the performers’ consideration of Julius Eastman’s art and the larger context of his life, creativity, and humanity. The work features bass-baritone Davóne Tines, and special guest collaborator Seth Parker Wood. The program will include performances of some of Eastman’s most affecting works, including “Buddha,” “Prelude to the Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc,” and “Stay on It.”

The world premiere of Collaborative dance work by Bobbi Jene Smith will showcase tenor Paul Appleby and soprano Julia Bullock performing music by Schubert, Bach, Connie Converse, and Pete Seeger.

Performance dates: June 10 & 12, 2022, 2:30 p.m. PDT

The world premiere of a new song cycle “The echoing of tenses,” commissioned from Anthony Cheung, spotlights tenor Paul Appleby presenting various poems by Arthur Sze, Monica Youn, Jenny Xie, and Ocean Vuong.

Performance date: June 10, 2022, 5 p.m. PDT

Next up is the world premiere of a cycle of new mini-concertos “Family Dinner” composed by Matthew Aucoin which spotlights AMOC artists and guest collaborators.

Performance date: June 10, 2022, 8 p.m. PDT

Julia Bullock presents “Harawi,” an hour-long song cycle for soprano and piano written by Olivier Messiaen.

Performance date: June 11, 2022

The Finale Concert stars counter-tenor Anthony Roth Costanzo singing baroque arias.
