David Portillo & Ellie Dehn Headline Minneapolis Opera’s ‘Albert Herring’

By Logan Martell

On May 22, 2021, Minneapolis Opera will close its Spring Season with Benjamin Britten’s springtime comedy, “Albert Herring.”

The production will mark the first time in over a year that MNO has performed at the Ordway Music Theatre, with the last time being their production of “Flight” in February 2020.

Acclaimed conductor and Britten interpreter Dame Jane Glover will lead the MNO Orchestra in her company debut. The cast includes David Portillo in the title role, Ellie Dehn as Lady Billows, Leah Brzyski as Miss Wordsworth, Clara Osowski as Mrs. Herring, Victoria Vargas as Florence Pike, Joseph Leppek as Mr. Upfold, Thomas Glass as Mr. Gedge, Allen Michael Jones as Mr. Budd, and Aaron Keeney and Zoie Reams as Sid and Nancy.

“The bright nature and levity of ‘Albert Herring’ coincides perfectly with the onset of warmer weather,” said President and General Director Ryan Taylor in a press release. “The entire Minnesota Opera organization is thrilled by the opportunity to get back into the Ordway to film this bright and breezy gem of an opera.

Returning to the Ordway Music Theater—albeit for a filmed performance—feels like a much-needed bit of normalcy for our organization,” Taylor said. “The artists and production team have looked forward to this moment with intense anticipation for a very long time. We hope it means we are one step closer to welcoming our audience back through those doors along with us.”

The production will be filmed by Flight Creative Media in accordance with health regulations. It will be available to stream for free through June 5, 2021.
