Tzadik Records has announced that it will release David Hertzberg’s “The Wake World” on April 24, 2020, making the debut recording of the work.

“The Wake World” had its world premiere at Opera Philadelphia’s Festival O17 in a production directed by R.B. Schlather at The Barnes Foundation. The opera won the Music Critics Association of North America’s prize for Best New Opera.

The opera, which is inspired by a fairy tale of the same name, stars soprano Maeve Höglund and mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey, as well as The Cross and the Opera Philadelphia Chorus under the music direction of Elizabeth Braden.

“The opera is about this girl’s journey through an enchanted palace where she goes to all these different rooms and these bizarre vivid and extremely psychedelic things happen. So on a surface level, the idea of this place automatically struck a chord with me. Like the Barnes Collection, this was something totally different from anything I had ever read,” Hertzberg told OperaWire in an interview that took place prior to the world’s world premiere showcase.
