David Daniels Files Counterclaim In Lawsuit

Countertenor David Daniels has filed a counterclaim against Andrew Lipian, who alleged that the famed opera star had assaulted him while a student at the University of Michigan.

The suit was filed by Daniels in early December as he contends that he never groped Lipian in 2017.

Per the court documents, “Lipian does not allege anywhere that Daniels promised to do things for him or treat him more favorably than other students if he engaged in unwelcome sexual conduct with Daniels or that Lipian’s refusal to engage in such conduct would adversely impact his studies or program.” Moreover, the famed performer noted that he never created a “sexually hostile environment” for Lipian, who also filed a lawsuit against the University.

This is the latest in a series of developing stories surrounding Daniels. In early summer of 2018, baritone Sam Schultz alleged that he had been raped by Daniels and his husband in 2010.

Daniels has taken a leave of absence from the University of Michigan. He also withdrew or was removed from several other performance opportunities he had been previously scheduled for.
