David Brophy Named Chief Conductor of WDR Funkhausorchester

David Brophy as he becomes the new chief conductor of the WDR Funkhausorchester.

The Irish conductor will take over the direction of the orchestra at the start of the 2024-25 season.

In a statement, WDR director Tom Buhrow said, “Just like the WDR Funkhausorchester, David Brophy wants to touch and inspire. We are very pleased that the orchestra has found an ideal partner in him. Known for his great joy in playing and with creative energy, he will further develop the diverse projects of this special entertainment orchestra.”

Brody added, “The WDR Funkhausorchester stands for excellent quality and outstanding professionalism. The musicians inspire with their thrilling virtuosity and let sparks fly into the audience. I’m really looking forward to winning hearts together with this unique orchestra to conquer the people.”

Brophy has conducted the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Opera Ireland, Glasthule Opera and NI Opera, among others.
