Danielle de Niese, Kate Lindsey & John Eliot Gardiner Lead New CD/DVD Releases

By Francisco Salazar

This week two full opera recordings will be released–a solo recital, and a choral album. Here is a look at what you can stream this week.

Cendrillon

Massenet’s rarely performed work gets released in a production by Fiona Shaw from the Glyndebourne Festival. The new DVD stars Nina Minasyan, Danielle de Niese, Kate Lindsey, Lionel Lhote, and Agnes Zwierko. John Wilson conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Semele

John Eliot Gardiner leads the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists in Handel’s masterpiece. The album includes Louise Alder, Lucile Richardot, Gianluca Buratto, Hugo Hymas, and Carlo Vistoli. This new recording showcases the fuller version of the score, with passages rarely heard in modern performances. The recording will be released first on digital and then on CD in October.

Rosa Mystica

Conductor Paul Spicer and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir perform musical portraits of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Rosa Mystica by Benjamin Britten is included as music by Anton Bruckner, Nicholas Ludford, Herbert Howells, John Tavener, and Judith Bingham. Learn more here.

Songs by Hamilton Harty

SOMM Recordings will release 17 world premiere recordings of Songs by Hamilton Harty with mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge and pianist Christopher Glynn. The recording includes Harty songs such as “Sea Wrack,” “The Blue Hills of Antrim” and “My Lagan Love are heard” as well as two early, unpublished works for solo piano; Idyll and Arlequin and Columbine.
