Daniel Barenboim Extends Berlin Staatsoper Contract

The Berlin State Opera has announced that Daniel Barenboim will continue as Music Director until 2027.

Barenboim, who recently celebrated 50 years with the Berlin Philharmonic, joined the Staatsoper in 1992 and has since served as music director.

The new contract will be a five-year extension said, Klaus Lederer, Berlin’s state culture minister.

According to Lederer the decision was an “overwhelming majority” decision.

Barenboim is set to conduct “Tristan und Isolde” this summer at the Staatsoper as well as give recitals at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. He will also tour with the Western-Divan Orchestra. He begins the 2019-20 season conducting Wagner’s Ring Cycle in Berlin followed by a new production of Saint-Saëns’s “Samson et Dalila” with Elina Garanca and Damian Szifron directing.
