Daniel Barenboim Announces Return to Conducting

By Francisco Salazar

The Berlin State Opera has announced the return of Daniel Barenboim to the stage.

The company said, “we are very happy to announce that Daniel Barenboim will conduct the New Year’s concerts, which will take place at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden on December 31, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. and January 1, 2023 at 4:00 p.m.”

The evening will include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, op. 125, performed by the Staatskapelle Berlin. Soloists include Camilla Nylund (soprano), Marina Prudenskaya (alto), and René Pape (bass). The Staatsoper Chorus which is conducted by Martin Wright will also perform.

The news comes after the conductor announced in October that he was taking a step back from performing due to a serious neurological condition. Barenboim has canceled a number of performances over the last months including an 80th birthday celebration.
