Cutting Edge Concerts Highlights Victoria Bonds’ ‘Mrs. President,’ Camille Claudel

By David Salazar

Victoria Bond’s “Mrs. President” will get a showcase at Symphony Space in New York this April 27, 2020 as part of the Cutting Edge Concerts Series.

“Mrs. President’ tells the story of Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for the highest office in the nation in 1872. She was often seen as a threat to society and deemed “Mrs. Satan” by the press.

The opera will star Valerie Bernhardt as Victoria Woodhull,  Scott Ramsay as Henry Ward Beecher, Michael Kelly as Col. James Blood, Katie Hannigan as Roxie, Keely Futterer as Isabella Beecher, David Charles Tay as Joseph Treat, and Chorus members of Dell’Arte Opera Ensemble. Pianist Marc Peloquin will accompany the performance, which will be conducted by the composer herself.

Additionally, the Cutting Edge Concerts will feature “Two Women by Two Women” on April 13, 2020. This concert will showcase “Song of Song of Songs” by Marisa Michelson, who will also perform the piece alongside the Constellation Chor; the other piece will be “The Letters of Mademoiselle C” by Dalit Warshaw. This song cycle highlights the story of Camille Claudel, the protégée of Auguste Rodin.
