
Cumbria Opera Festival Announces 2025 Season

Details of the 2025 Cumbria Opera Festival have been announced.
A new English translations of Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” opens the festival. This large-scale production features the Cumbria Community Opera Chorus and the Cumbria Opera Youth Chorus.
Performance Dates: August 21 – 23, 2025 (Penrith Methodist Church)
The “Night at the Opera” series features two soloists performing opera hits. Soprano Joan Rodgers CBE also gives a masterclass at these events.
Performance Dates: August 24 – 26, 2025 (Barrow Town Hall, Appleby Public Hall, & St John’s Church, Keswick)
An adapted two-person version of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” is up next.
Performance Dates: August 27 & 28, 2025 (Kendal Town Hall & Tithe Barn, Carlisle)
The final large-scale performance is Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw.”
Performance Dates: August 29 & 30, 2025 (Victoria Hall, Grange-over-Sands)
Joan Rodgers gives another masterclass in Grange-over-Sands to close out the festival.
Performance Date: August 30, 2025 (Victoria Hall)
Soloists will be announced at a later date.
The 2025 Festival is paired with a series of education workshops across Cumbria. Singers and directors from the Cumbria Opera Group will lead singing workshops and “Play in a Day” sessions at schools throughout the county.
The Young Composers’ Competition also returns. The winner receives mentoring sessions from composer Jen Hartley and will have their winning composition premiered as part of the touring Night at the Opera series. Cumbrian composers under the age of 21 are encouraged to apply.
